Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) are a class of systems that integrate computation, communication, and physical processes to create intelligent, highly responsive, and autonomous systems. These systems use computer algorithms, networked communication, and sensing to interact with the physical world in real-time, often performing critical and safety-critical tasks. CPS have broad applications in areas such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure.
For example, a CPS application in the transportation domain could be a self-driving car that uses cameras, sensors, and GPS to perceive the physical environment, make decisions about its actions, and control its motion. In the energy domain, a CPS application could be a smart grid that uses sensors and communication networks to monitor and control energy generation, distribution, and consumption in real-time.
CPS pose new and challenging research problems, requiring a multidisciplinary approach that draws from fields such as control systems, computer science, communication networks, and electrical engineering. The goal of CPS research is to create systems that are highly reliable, secure, and efficient, and that can perform their intended functions in real-world environments despite unanticipated and changing conditions.
